Are Thailand’s hotels ready to welcome travellers with neurodivergence?

by | Aug 16, 2024

Thailand’s hospitality industry is progressing towards inclusivity, but are its hotels equipped to welcome neurodivergent travellers?

Individuals who are neurodivergent, including those with autism, ADHD, or who have self-diagnosed through lived experiences, require access to specific accommodations. While some Thai hotels provide general accessibility features, many lack the comprehensive understanding needed to fully support these guests.

Current State of Accessibility in Thailand’s Hotels

In 2022, the Department of Provincial Administration reported 30,000 registered hotels nationwide. Meanwhile, the Online Travel Agency website lists over 60,000 hotels (Bangkok Post). Booking.com lists 2,377 hotels in Thailand on their website, which they claim are accessible and disability-friendly.

While physical disabilities are widely understood, neurodiversity is often overlooked. Hotels claiming to be accessible should also consider the needs of travellers who are neurodivergent. Thai hotels should prioritise tailored accommodations and staff training to ensure a welcoming experience for all guests.

Challenges Faced by Neurodivergent Travellers

Neurodivergent travellers often face challenges such as sensory sensitivities and the need for clear, predictable environments. Well-trained staff play a major role in creating a welcoming atmosphere. Some hotels have begun to lead by example, implementing sensory-friendly rooms and clear communication touchpoints.

Government policies and industry collaborations are also key in driving progress. Continuous improvement and feedback are essential for enhancing disability inclusion efforts, including neuroinclusion.

Steps inclusion specialists recommend practices such as using travel agencies who specialise in supporting families who experience neurodivergence. They offer detailed information about hotels, including sensory triggers and room layouts. This practice has proven effective in many markets. (Bloomberg)

Market research shows that 78% of families of individuals with autism choose to give up travel altogether. This indicates a large portion of the population feels their needs are not being met by the current hospitality industry. Moreover, 94% of those surveyed expressed interest in exploring new destinations provided there are accessible hotels offering neurodiversity friendly accommodations. How is Thailand’s hospitality sector embracing neuroinclusion?

The initial focus for these hotels is on training. In 2023, IHG hotels in Bangkok partnered with Steps to become ‘disability inclusion ready’ in five pilot hotels. This involves a comprehensive approach to making strategies, human resources processes, policies, and physical environments accessible. (Steps, IHG Hotels & Resorts)

As the Steps inclusion team has worked with Staybridge Suites Bangkok Thonglor and Staybridge Suites Bangkok Sukhumvit, throughout 2024, it has become clear that IHG’s commitment to inclusion extends to customers as well.

Both Staybridge Suites properties have introduced accommodations for travellers who are neurodivergent. These include features such as wheelchair-accessible guest rooms, adaptable furniture, lift access to all floors, and accessibility aids like visual alarms, knock lights, vibrating pillows, and audible hallway alarms. According to Staybridge Suites cluster Senior Marketing and Communications Manager, Ramida Tananawaphat,

‘We are dedicated to inclusivity, ensuring that all guests feel welcomed and accommodated. In partnership with Steps, Staybridge Suites Bangkok has implemented a comprehensive staff training program designed to enhance understanding of neurodivergent individuals, thereby creating a seamless and warmly welcoming experience that fully meets the needs of neurodivergent guests.’

Congratulations to Staybridge Suites Bangkok Thonglor and Staybridge Suites Bangkok Sukhumvit for becoming among Thailand’s first hotels to extend meaningfully inclusive hospitality to all travellers!
